How Does Jay Change Throughout The Great Gatsby

In the story, “The Great Gatsby”, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, portrays an idea that Nick’s personality is being changed throughout the story along with his emotional state by the rich and powerful people he is around. The progression of Nick throughout the story shows a man who wanted to live a simple life at home but then turns quickly into a person who he himself couldn't recognize.

In the beginning, the story begins through the eyes of Nick. It’s describing how he lives in West Egg in a small house in New Jersey. He is surrounded by rich people in mansions with one of them being an old friend that he went to Yale with who lives across the bay. At one of the parties he meets the mysterious Jay Gatsby and Gatsby is unusually friendly towards him. He asks him to go up in his hydroplane and other fritherous things that he respectfully denies. Later on, Nick agrees to go to lunch with Gatsby at a place called The old Metropole, but its not any ordinary place. The place their at is hidden and full of rich people, criminals, and gamblers. This would not be a normal setting for Nick in any shape or form. Gatsby introduces Nick to a man named Meyer Wolfsheim. Mr.Wolfsheim says,”I understand you’re looking for a business gonnegtion.”pg 70. And Gatsby's answers for Nick saying,”This is just a friend. I told you we’d talk about that some other time.”pg 71. This is showing that there is some shady stuff going on around Nick and that his new friend Gatsby might be pulling him into. The thing is that this didn’t even seem to phase Nick. Before he would have been a little shocked or anxious about that comment by Wolfsheim and Gatsby. But he’s changed in a small way where is doesn't seem to get to him. As the story progresses we see the relationship between Nick and Jordan begging to happen when the narrator says,”Her wan, scornful mouth smiled, and so i drew up again closer, this time to my face.” pg 80. Nick has been stressed about the problems with Tom and Gatsby that he didn’t even care about his relationship with Jordan who at first he cared for deeply. But now is blowing her off and saying he doesn't care. This is not the same Nick in the beginning of the story. Later on, Gatsby and Daisy go for a drive in Gatsby's yellow car and go through the Valley of Ashes. And when they are least expecting it, Myrtle runs out in front of their car and gets ran over and killed. And instead of stopping, they drive away leaving the body. And with that being Wilson's wife he goes crazy wanting to know who did it, and Tom being the man he is tells Wilson that it was Gatsby's car and that Gatsby did it, even though Daisy was driving the car and ran her over. As they continue, Gatsby gets ready to take a swim in his pool when Wilson sneaks up behind him and shoots Gatsby in the back. Following that Wilson kills himself on the spot. Both bodies were found by Nick and some of Gatsby's workers. After this event, Nick gets into a deep depression and is trying to arrange his funeral, but no one will show.
