In To Kill A Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, Jem always seems to be looking out for his little sister Scout. Out of all the characters in this story, Jem changed the most (Mostly Because Of Puberty). For a ten-year-old, Jem is a responsible and trustworthy child, unlike Scout. As the story moves on, we get to see both Jem and Scout get older and grow up. But now Jem is thirteen, so let's see how much he has changed throughout the wonderful story. So Miss Caroline offered to give Walter money for lunch, but he declined. Miss Caroline was persistent in paying, so Scout spoke up and said Walter would not be able to afford the lunch. After that Scout got mad that Walter didn't speak up to the teacher, so she was about to beat him up when Jem got there he felt bad for Walter so he invited him over for supper. This shows that Scout isn't very mature or respectful, but Jem is very understanding of Walter's situation, and he feels bad for him. Another example of Jem being more responsible, respectful, understanding, and kind is when Jem gets mad that Miss Dubois is saying bad things about their father Atticus, so Jem rips up her yard. When Atticus finds this out, he goes over to see Miss Dubois to ask if she wants the kids to help her with anything, all she asked for was for them to come over to her house and read to her.
