To Kill A Mockingbird In To Kill A Mockingbird, a historical fiction by Harper Lee, Jem and Scout grow throughout the novel. The children grow more mature through the teachings and the lessons of trustworthy adult. One of the first lessons Jem and Scout learn is that killing an innocent creature is a sin. After Jem and Scout get an air rifle, Atticus tells them, “it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird” (72). Before learning the teaching, when Dill came over, Jem tells Dill and Scout that Jem will strike a match under Boo Radley to bring him out (119). Jem is trying to kill a mockingbird, Boo, by trying to pull him out from his house to the society, where people behave toward other people by judging unfairly. After the death of Mrs.Dubose, Atticus tells the children she was the most courageous person she knew. He tells them, the true meaning of courage is “ it’s when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what”(149). Before, the children thought the courage is a man with a gun, Before the teaching, the children are ashamed of Atticus, because he had nothing to brag about since he does not do the works the other fathers do, but sits in office all day (need to find pg). This shows that the children knows the wrong kind of courage since they only respect the brash machismo, not the ones who are facing the world and are fighting for what is right. After they learn the teaching, during the conversation of Uncle Jack and Atticus, Scout overhears the conversation when Atticus says that when the real bad event is going to happen, he is not worried about Jem keeping his head up, but he is worried about Scout. The overhearing of the conversation was important because it told Scout the true meaning of truth. It told her that to keep trying for what you think is right even though the world will try to do anything to bring you down.
