In the novella “The Dead”, Joyce uses technique of symbolism for describing the key points of the story which flows freely throughout the novella. Symbols have hidden meanings for better understanding in a very precise manner. They hide in writings and life, disguised by surrounding words or actions, unremarkably inspiring each. These symbols can often only understood by readers if they pay close attention on text, and sometimes only a glimpse is required to unveil these symbols. Gabriel wears galoshes as he wants to keep his feet dry which indicates that he likes to be the controller of what can come in contact with him. According to the story Gabriel has a strong dominant nature or superiority complex; he sees himself better than other persons and can’t handle being made fun of. An example of his superiority complex is the he seems to believe that he belongs to a higher culture. "Well," said Gabriel, "if it comes to that, you know, Irish is not my language." (Joyce 453). His attitude while talking about galoshes and says which are worn by almost everyone in the continent clearly shows his obsession with galoshes. Gabriel also attempts to get his wife to wear galoshes too in order to show his superiority of culture over her wife. “Goloshes!” said Mrs. Conroy. “That’s the latest. Whenever it’s wet underfoot I must put on my goloshes. Tonight even, he wanted me to put them on, but I wouldn’t. The next thing he’ll buy me will be a diving suit.” (Joyce 293). Also, galoshes has indication of resistance as galoshes are made up of rubber or plastic which prevent people from getting in contact in water of rain or snow. Humanity is full of errors and chances which establish life. The flexibility and unpredictability of snow reflects the human nature. For example, melting snow becomes feeble and turns to a transparent water which is demonstrating the wretched, but most common characteristics of mankind. Like in the story “The Dead” Gretta breaks down in to tears after listening an Irish song which reminds her about a boy she used to love during her girlhood, and shows the melted character like snowflakes and becomes transparent to her husband. "He was very fond of me and he was such a gentle boy. We used to go out together, walking, you know, Gabriel, like the way they do in the country. He was going to study singing only for his health. He had a very good voice, poor Michael Furey." (Joyce 753). Whereas, frozen snow becomes strong, hard, and turns in to an unshakable ice which symbolizes the dominant characteristics of all humans. Joyce uses snowflakes as great symbol in order to elucidate both strong and the weak characteristics of ice and
