A Friend’s Loss From the day on following Caesar’s death, two people fought for the people of Rome’s trust and loyalty. These two characters were Brutus and Antony. Each took a different approach to trying to convince the people of Rome to take his side. The comparison and difference between each orient speech. The people of Rome were easily manipulated through Brutus’s use of logos, but were just as easily turned against him through Antony’s pathos. Throughout the speeches of Brutus and Antony, they both address the people of Rome to consume the rightfulness of power in Rome. In Brutus’s speech he uses ethos. “ Believe me for mine honor, and have respected to mine honor that you may believe” (What is the basic difference). In act three scene one Antony says “When the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept” ( Elements 835). This is a use of pathos. He uses pathos, because if the people of Rome are distressed then Caesar sympathizes for them and with them. This shows that Caesar is not a bad guy as others proclaimed him to be. “I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke, But here I am to speak what I know” (Elements 835). In this quote Antony states that he does not want to be shrewd, but Antony wants to tell the People of Rome what really happened to Caesar and what should happen to change the power in Rome in favor of the people. Antony appeals to the citizens feelings. He does this because he has strong feelings about the tragic death of his dear friend Julius Caesar. He wants revenge on the conspirators and then he wants to achieve the position in power in Rome (What is the basic difference).
