How Does Kafka Metamorphosis Change

The Metamorphosis is a novella written by Francis Kafka. Metamorphosis, according to the Miriam-Webster dictionary, is “the developmental change in the form or structure” of a creature like an insect (Metamorphosis). Metamorphosis can also simply mean change. Even though the novella is about a bug going through a metamorphosis, a whole family changes throughout the story, especially Grete. Grete is the younger sister of Gregor Samsa. One morning, Gregor wakes up as a bug. Grete takes on the role of taking care of her brother because her parents do not want to take care of Gregor. She brings him food twice a day and cleans his room. Throughout the story, though, she has her own metamorphosis, eventually rushing when she is feeding him and doing a bad job of cleaning his room. By the end of the story, she locks Gregor in his room and tells their parents that they need to get rid of him. …show more content…

She shows this when he will not open his bedroom door and she asks, “Gregor? Is something wrong with you? Do you want anything?” (Kafka 6). According to Wardani, “She is the only one in her family who can meet Gregor in his new body and who can read and respond to his needs” (Wardani ). Another time, Grete shows that she is caring is when she brings Gregor food. At first, she brings in multiple kinds of food—old, moldy food or good, new food—to see what kind he likes. Once she sees he like the old moldy food she only brings him that (Kafka 22-23). She also cares for Gregor by cleaning his room and making it look nice. She would also tell her parents in detail what Gregor’s room looked like, what he had eaten, and if he had shown any improvements (Kafka 29).
