A Symbol of Rebellion In Suzanne Collins' gripping dystopian novel, The Hunger Games, readers view Katniss Everdeen becoming a symbol of rebellion, hope, and resistance against the Capitol’s tyranny. The Hunger Games is a story set in a future where society is divided into districts ruled by the oppressive regime of the Capitol. The narrative follows Katniss Everdeen, a girl from District 12, as she volunteers to take her sister’s place in an annual televised fight called the Hunger Games. Despite the odds of Katniss winning, she and her district partner, Peeta, are able to win the games by using their skills and knowledge. This demonstrates to the districts that there can be an authentic sense of unity between them, which especially shows when District 11 sends Katniss bread, “This bread came from District 11”, she says (Collins 238). Which indicates to the districts that if they unite against a common enemy, they can overcome the odds. Additionally, Katniss and Peeta outsmarting the Gamemakers projects the concept of resistance, courage, and extreme defiance. Templesmith, the game announcer, changes the rules in favor of having two winning tributes, however, he changes them back to only one victor once Katniss and Peeta are the last two victors. Katniss responds by pretending for the both of them to commit suicide, knowing that the Gamemakers must have a victor, which is revealed when the Gamemakers change their mind again, “Stop!
