The evolution of the musical genre hip hop has been gradual, especially in a country such as the United States where being different is looked down upon. Past rappers have set trends that have influenced current rappers that have cultivated hip hop as we know today. Kid N’ Play are a rap group that, like previously stated, has influenced current hip hop artists. Kid N’ Play’s high energy, mixed with their innovative dancing style, musical skills, and colorful 90’s fashion left a mark on hip hop that is still felt until this very day. Baggy clothing was made popular by this rap group and most rappers today include some type of baggy clothing in their outfits which was made popular by Kid N’ Play. Another item that Kid N’ Play made popular were the sleek shades. “It takes a sophisticated kind of dude to pull off such a distinct shape of sunglasses. But Play did it in the '90s just as A$AP Rocky and Ferg are doing it today (while looking damn good!)” (Fuse). A$AP Rocky and Ferg are just some of the rappers that currently wear sleek shades. Another popular rap artist group “Migos” also wear sleek shades quite often and has also influenced the younger generation of today as well to begin wearing these sleek shades. Their time a relevance was during a time when “gangsta rap” was the most popular. The thing that set them apart was their positive approach while making their music. Kid N’ Play was one of the driving forces that help make hip-hop acceptable in mainstream America. The overall message of most of their songs was about real problems in African American society. Things such as bullying were some of the topics that they were talked about in their music, which is unique during the “gangsta rap” era. Kid N’ Play started the revolution of rappers that spread a positive message rather than a message that talked about gang violence and drugs. Artist such as Childish Gambino and Chance the Rapper have said that they were influenced by Kid N’ Play’s positive style of rapping which helped mold the type of rapper that they are
