The film, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013), directed by Francis Lawrence, uses symbolism to convey the ideas of rebellion and hope in the nation of Panem. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire follows Katniss Everdeen, the victor of the 74th Hunger Games, be picked as a tribute in the 3rd Quarter Quell and shows the beginning of the uprise against the Capitol of Panem. These ideas are conveyed through the use of body language, or more specifically, hand gestures which are employed to show unrest and solidarity. Additionally, clothing and props are used to emphasise the rise of the rebellion, specifically in the Capitol and among the victors. Most significantly, the mocking jay is an all-encompassing symbol and face of the rebellion and hope for the citizens in the districts of Panem. The use of props in the form of gold jewellery can be seen to represent an alliance between the people that wear them, and their commitment to not be Capitol pawns. This is portrayed through Effie handing out the jewellery and saying, “A token, show them that we are a team”. This alliance is further reinforced by Haymich giving his token before entering the arena to District 4 tribute, Finnick, to signal to Katniss he is part of their alliance and rebellion. Furthermore, Katniss’ mocking jay dress, designed by Capitol designer Cinna, is a public display and representation of his rebellion and open support for Katniss. This is seen when Cinna turns Snow’s requested white dress shows Katniss to be the mocking jay through the use of fire, black plumage, and bird wings, showing that even the people from the Capitol are starting to rebel against the Capitol.
