In the short story “ The Sniper “ author Liam O'Flaherty includes the element of surprise to reveal that war causes not only physical risk, but psychological suffering. The story takes place in Dublin ( Ireland ) at night of a civil war against The Republicans and the free staters. The sniper was on the Republicans side. By his excitement to kill then his sudden guilt, it could show he was a first time killer. But by his brief description of being a man who was used to looking at death shows he’s experienced. The author uses suspense that build as the story progresses. In the story, the sniper is lying on a rooftop in Dublin. As he makes a decision to light a cigarette, the gunman on the opposing side sees the light of match. The gunman decided to shoot, and misses. At this point in the story the author unleashes physical risk. Then the sniper saw where the shot came from ( across the street on the rooftop ) then an armored car came with a woman inside that pointed out the sniper to the gunman, So then the sniper shoots the guy and the woman that pointed the sniper out to the gunman.After that the gunman on the other side shoots and hits the sniper in the …show more content…
The sniper was wounded, and needed to escape, I can see how that can be a block for his escape plan. The sniper was guilty of the kills that he just pursued. The author made it so that us, the readers can have sympathy for the character. ) The sniper knows has to think of an escape plan with his wounded arm. The sniper decides to pull a ruse ( a trick ) on the gunman on the other side of the street.
