Frankenstein, a novel by Mary Shelley, is an excellent representation of literature work which shows how past events can affect positively or negatively, the present activities, attitudes, or values of a character. In Frankenstein both Victor and the creature experience life changing events early in the novel, because of this their attitudes on life change. By nature, a being is born with a kind, gentle, benevolent, and innocent ‘soul.’ However, it is through the subjective experiences where one’s soul can become tainted by society. Throughout the novel, the creature receives the most character development. It could be said that although the creature is not human, it does seem to have a conscious, inferring that it could have a ‘soul.’ Since the creature has a conscious, when he was created, just like a normal infant or toddler would the first thing he did was go to his parent, Victor. However, he eventually found his way to the deLacey family. He spent his time observing the family in a cottage; this is where he learns how to read, write, and what familiar love feels like.
