In the story, “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant, Mme. Loisel is a dynamic character who changes from materialistic and discontent to unworldly and ambitious. In the beginning Mme. Loisel is materialistic and discontent. Maupassant writes, “...no jewels...only things she loves ; she felt as if she were made for them.” This description of Mme. Loisel’s desires reveals a lot of her personality. She is materialistic, and desires materialistic things rather than noticing the the things around her that are much more valuable like her husband's love and respect etc. Mme. is also very discontent in the beginning. Loisel changes to become ambitious and unworldly. When Mme. Loisel buys the ‘diamond’ necklace the family becomes bankrupt and penniless she decides to make up for it which she had to do the hard work and labor usually done by people living in poverty. Maupassant writes , “ ‘ We must see about replacing the diamonds’... Madame Loisel came to know the ghastly life of abject poverty...She came to know the heavy work of the house, the hateful duties of the kitchen...” This quotation shows that Mme. Loisel had become ambitious and goal-oriented. She got to do the hard work and labor she never had done before teaching her that she should’ve been like this before and not ashamed of her place in society. Mme. Loisel also becomes unworldly and shameless by the end of the story. Maupassant writes, “And, clad like a poor woman, she went to the fruiterer, to the grocer, to the butcher, a basket on her arm, haggling, insulted, fighting for every wretched halfpenny of her money.” When Maupassant writes this, Mme. Loisel change can be inferred. She doesn’t seem to care what she has and in fact becomes proud of being poor and broken. Mme.
