Introduction to Madonna
Imagine being such a hit that the Beastie Boys are the opening act for your concert. This was Madonna during her 1985 Virgin Tour. Madonna, "The Queen of Pop," has had an impact of social significance on the US through her fashion and musical influence. She played a huge role in the “new album new me” mindset that many artists have adopted nowadays, with many taking on new looks and styles for each new album they produce. Madonna has gone through so much herself as an artist, and she has paved the way for future artists, male and female alike. She was the first star to really utilize visual effects on stage for her concerts. Before Madonna, a concert was just a crowd listening to music. All these impacted America in different ways. Some of these are shown in how other people started treating those in the LGBTQ community, and the latino and black community. While some things were still not as welcome in the 80’s as they are now, she still was able to begin pushing towards change.“As a girl brought up in multi-racial Detroit, it was natural for her to surround herself with multicultural collaborators and to feature black and Latino characters in her videos. Equally, gay and lesbian characters appeared in her videos from as early as 1986, and she never missed an opportunity to proudly parade her gay dancers, friends and collaborators.” (Matt Cain, 2018) Madonna showed America the right way to treat others, proudly showing off her friends, no matter what they identified as, what race they were, or what they believed in.
