How Does Mamaji Affect Pi's Life

At times, the individuals that we meet impact one’s life so greatly that we are left distinctly different than we were before they came into our lives. In Martel’s Life of Pi, the main character, Pi’s life is impacted by Mamaji. On page twenty-five of the novel it states, “It is true that those we meet change us, sometimes so profoundly that we are not the same afterwards...” This quote applies directly to Pi because Mamaji gave him his name and taught him how to swim. “But no swimming pool in Mamaji’s eyes matched the glory of the Piscine Molitor.”(11) “That is how I got my name...:Piscine Molitor Patel.”(12) “Under his watchful eye I lay on the beach and flutter my legs…..I went there with him three times a week.”(9) “I swam as fast as as i could..”(106) A name is essential to identity as it defines the individual; by giving Pi a name, Mamaji has given Pi something he will carry with him for the rest of his life. Pi’s swimming ability is a key part of of how he didn’t die during the shipwreck.
