Persepolis Photo Essay
Marjane Satrapi uses graphic images in her novel, Persepolis, which greatly impacts the story while exploring realistic experiences with religions, danger, and gender roles. She uses images to help the reader get a great understanding of the story. Her images also allow the reader to picture what she saw during her childhood experiences. Religious beliefs, danger, and gender roles play a major part in the story. As marjane grows up she discovers what her religion is really about, what dangers she faces, and her place in society due to gender roles.
Marjane Satrapi uses images in her novel to reveal her relationship with god. There are many instances throughout the book where Marjane is shown speaking to god. Sometimes she was angry and other times she was happy. On page 53 it shows Marjane happily speaking to god and on page 13 it shows how upset she is. As the novel progresses and Marjane grows up the reader sees less and less of god. Marjane does a great job of using the pictures to let the reader understand the mood of the text.

In Persepolis men have total power over women. This plays a huge part in the novel because the government is run by men in which they make decisions that most women don’t agree with at all. She uses images to show gender roles by sending all the men to war and taking them from their families and leaving the wives by themselves.
