Bierce’s “Chickamauga”, Howell’s “Editha,” and Twain’s “The War Prayer” all offer strong attacks against the sentiment that war is glorious and holy. Each of the stories takes place during one of the American Wars. All of the short stories show how society at the time viewed war, also the true horrors of the war through realism. Each story uses a different techniques to prove that war isn’t holy or glorious at all.

In 1990, author Tim O’Brien described his view of war with his “work of fiction” The Things They Carried, a book supposedly based on his experiences in the Vietnam War. His descriptive and emotional work richly depicts the feelings and activities of several drafted soldiers in the Vietnam War. Twenty-two years later and based on an entirely different war, came American Sniper, the memoir of a sniper in the Iraq War, by Chris Kyle. Kyle’s proud and rhapsodizing work depicts his strong supportive feelings for the war and what he did there.
Klay’s short stories indicate how different war is for every soldier by containing a different narrator and plot for each story. The different stories show all sorts of different emotions such as fear, guilt, helplessness, and loss of oneself. Klay’s book repeatedly emphasizes the message that civilians will never be able understand a soldier’s experience, therefore civilians should reconsider whether sympathy is the proper way to treat a veteran. The idea that civilians must can only understand a veteran if they have experienced war leaves readers to question whether they truly understand a veterans war experience. Through Klay’s short stories “War Stories,” “After Action Report” and “Frago,” his characterization of certain characters, use of situational irony humor, and decision to have different narrators for every story allows civilians to become more familiar with different war experiences providing a better understanding on how war is a different experience for every
For example, one way he shows satire is in the beginning of the prompt he says “country was up in arms, the war was on, in every breast burned the holy fire of patriotism”(Twain). Twain is showing how the soldiers were ready for war that even their chest was on fire because of how much patriotism they had. When soldiers go to war I don't think there breast burned them for feeling patriotic. This shows how ironic he is because that didn't really happen. Mark Twain uses satire to portray different issues that were going on during the time period. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, author Mark Twain uses Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer to represent romanticism and realism. Doing so formed the characters into two drastically different persons. Mark Twain uses satirical elements to contrast the two main characters in their personalities and views. Tom Sawyer is a child who is blinded with fictional literature and the worlds view on slaves.
Twain sets the scene for“proud fathers and mothers and sisters and sweethearts cheering them on.” They are cheering them on to war. Kris are in the streets wishing their patriots good luck and God’s aid from the steps of there oratory. These battalions with “gathering momentum, rushing charge, flashing sabers and the flight of the foe, (Twain),” charging a battery inside them to win at all costs. After the huge parade of good luck through the streets, came the “long” prayer.

Mark Twain's Use of Satire in Huckleberry Finn Throughout his pieces of literature, the famous American author Mark Twain portrays his personal views of society using satire and irony in his stories. He makes fun of broken parts in the American society relentlessly and makes sure the readers understand how outrageous some acts were during the early-to-mid 1800s. Twain seems to target specific aspects in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn such as how young people could be conflicted between morality and legality, the loss of self-respect for money, and the effects of herd mentality. He has an interesting approach at giving the reader insight, but his main ideas for the theme shine through and are clearly depicted.
Throughout human history, war has been a common solution to settle conflict or disagreements between people. War has and will always be apart of this world, because no matter how much death it causes humans will never change. Some people have come to see the idiocy in war and have even written about it in poems, short stories, etc. One of these people, Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, has mocked this absurd and pointless practice. Twain’s essay The War Prayer satirizes the customs of praying for safety and victory in war and for equating war with patriotism.
Twain claims that satire, “ involves the mocking of human behavior and social interaction to form a point.” In other words, satire mocks how someone behaves socially to prove an idea. Twain mocks advice that adults give youth along with the idea of it in his piece “Advice to Youth.” The advice that Twain gives are words that are typically said to youth but explained it in a creative way. For example, one piece of advice he gives to youth is, “Be respectful to your superiors,- if a person offends you, do not resort to extreme measures; simply watch your chance and hit him with a brink.”
