Do you have any piercings? Have you ever contemplated the idea of a tattoo? If you plan on modifying your body, there are some obstacles that you have to take into consideration. Whether it’s getting a needle pierced through your skin, ink injected or silicon surgically implanted, making physical changes to one’s self has its difficulties in the working world. Modifications made to one’s body should be respected when applying for a job but in today’s society, they are looked down upon. This has made finding a job tricky for those with an alternative appearance. Within those couple of minutes, one’s first impression means everything. Your appearance and how you carry yourself plays an important factor in the decision of your employment. However, what if you were denied the job just because of a couple studs. How would you feel? Most businesses will hire those with tattoos and visible piercings but other businesses strongly oppose to the modifications. Colleen Harris, a 27-year-old librarian from New York who holds multiple masters degrees, is an example of how people should be hired based on their knowledge and not be penalized because of their modifications. Harris has a couple of piercings and tattoos on her knuckles, hands and arms. Her sleeve tattoo starts from the tops of her shoulders and extends down the side of her body to her ankles. She feels no pressure to cover up and believes that qualifications regarding work should speak for themselves. Being decorated with ink and metal should not be a factor in the employer’s decision. If an employer were to discriminate against an applicant because of their body enhancements, they would be being unethical and breaking the law. We don't discriminate someone based on the colour of their skin, so why don't the same rules apply to someone who has decided to cosmetically colour their skin? Modifications create an opportunity for someone to show off their uniqueness and individual style. Everyone should be able to fulfill their desires and modify their bodies all they want without having their opportunities
