Happiness is a feeling unlike any other. It's found in many things and gives people a feeling of fullness and a sense of enjoyment in life. In the novel “The Great Gatsby'' written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, displays the rise and fall of Gatsby through finding love, and the effect money has on happiness. Money is portrayed as the key to love in most of the relationships. Daisy values money as the key to love, when she is in love with Gatsby, but she settles for marrying Tom because he has old money. This shows that Daisy will put aside her feelings as long as she has money and a well-known stature, she will be “in love.” When Tom finds out about Daisy having feelings for Gatsby Tom is distraught. When he pushes her to reveal why she had feelings for Gatsby, Daisy responds with "I did love him once – but I loved you too". Hence stating the end of their marriage. Money plays …show more content…
Myrtle explains she only married Wilson because, “ I thought he was a gentleman, I thought he knew something about breeding but he wasn't fit to lick my shoe.” (Fitzgerald 34). Myrtle's love for Tom is all based on wealth because Myrtle is happier with Tom due to Tom's money and how she can get anything she wants. In contrast to her current relationship with Wilson; who generates a very low income and cannot spoil Myrtle with any belongings, but only his love. Tom is able to make Myrtle happy with the only thing she cares about, Money. Gatsby's relationship with money is unlike any other; he is unhappy. Gatsby is never jovial with all the parties he throws because Daisy never wanders in. The wrinkles in his pool after all the guests leave symbolize how he can disperse his money to please others, but he's left with a hole in the middle and the only way he can fill the hole is with Daisy. This is significant because it symbolizes that money does not obtain happiness. He believes that money is the one way he will get her
