In the story “The Great Gatsby” created by Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald we are experiencing through the Perspective of Nick Carraway and The mysterious man who lives nearby, Mr. Jay Gatsby. Love is such a precious and powerful thing. We use love as a way to connect us with objects and people with a deeper meaning. We see these things as something that makes us feel happy, and yet, it also has the capability to destroy people’s relationships. Breaking it while making a mess. A major theme in the Great Gatsby is the relationships between the characters and the way the characters use their relationships. Within the story, Myrtle Wilson Uses Love as a weapon to deceive both George and Tom for the purpose to gain for herself. When Myrtle, Tom, and Nick start strolling around the city, they encounter a man with a box of puppies that are worth 10 dollars each to where Myrtle asks the dealer “How much is it”? And Tom buying replying “Here’s your money. Go and buy ten more dogs with it”(Fitzgerald 28). A prime example that Myrtle uses her love for Tom so she can gain access to buy rich accessories, dogs, or etc because unlike Tom, George is pretty poor, which indicates that he can’t use money to look cool or get pets because again, he can’t afford it. During chapter 2, when Nick arrives at Myrtle and Tom’s apartment, Myrtle discusses about her regrets about marrying George and says “I knew I made a mistake. He borrowed somebody’s best suit to get married in, and never told me about it”(Fitzgerald 35). It really shows where Myrtle’s heart is for George. She just looks for money in man. It’s ironic though, while she uses her love to deceive George, her love is also deceiving her because Tom claims that “Daisy catholic and don’t believe in a divorce”(Fitzgerald 33). But in reality, Tom doesn't want to be in a long distance relationship with Myrtle, Instead, he’s treating her like a possession in the palm of his hand.
