The Impact of Nick Carraway on Jay Gatsby While perceptions may not always be true, they are sometimes what society must believe. The Great Gatsby by F. The world is a place where belief is tested. What one chooses to believe is based on their interpretation of the truth. Nick Carraway’s thoughts were our perception of the truth in this tragic epic. Therefore, we have no choice but to accept Nick’s testimony of the events that transpired. Just as we have to believe Nick, we also have to conform to living in our truths. Nick was living in the background of Gatsby’s life, being a mere shadow in the events that took place. Thus, instead of being a bystander, Nick should not let society place him, but choose where to place himself. In all, it is better to be the Gatsby of your own epic than to be the Nick Carraway of someone
