A young man named Nick Carraway who is immensely impressionable and taken advantage of narrates the Great Gatsby. Throughout the book, you learn that Nick is a follower. Nick follows Tom Buchanan, Jordan Baker, and Jay Gatsby around like a lost dog. He is obviously obliviously impressionable and lost within himself. For Nicholas to improve himself and his lifestyle he should do all of the following things: make boundaries, build his self-confidence and esteem, find out who his real friends are, and not let other people take advantage of him. All of the steps in this essay are put together to guide Nick in his decisions and help him become the man he desires to become. This first step is to make boundaries. We have already spoken on this topic some, so we will talk over some examples. The whole book is based on Gatsby’s love for Daisy Buchanan. Jay Gatsby is a charming man who throws lavish parties whom hundreds of people occupy. Gatsby is obsessed with his teenage love for a now married girl named Daisy. Once Nick Carraway moves next door to Gatsby, he becomes infatuated with him. Gatsby befriends Carraway and subtly bribes him to bring Daisy to tea where he has planned for them to meet again for the first time in years. Nick never fully comes to conclusion that Gatsby used Nick throughout their whole friendship. Nick seems naïve and somewhat dependent when it came to the friendship. If Nick had come to terms with the reason behind their friendship, I believe it would have crushed Carraway completely. None of Carraway’s friendships were based on trust, they were all based on secrecy and lies. If he realized sooner, he would not have interfered with two marriages and multiple friendships.
