How Does O Brien Use Language Techniques In The Things They Carried

“The Things They Carried” was a story about soldiers caught in the disorientation of the Vietnam War. There are lots of possible ways to write when writing a story about war, especially about death. I enjoyed reading together as a class for this story, however there were some things about it that I was concerned and not sure about. From my stand point, I would like to indeed discuss the author’s style of writing, his meaning of the title and the way the author and his characters deal with death.

Pain is also one of the most immobilize emotions that a human can experience. Pain is generally invented in many kind of ways. There are two types of pain which are emotional and physical pain. Both can be occurred at the same time as well. Obrien briefly explains that these young men or I should say the soldiers of the Vietnam War feel both of these types of pain during their time in Vietnam. Moreover, the pain that was felt on the body was created by all of the actual things that the soldiers carried. Indeed as a soldier there are variance of crucial tools that one’s needed to bring, these are described as follows,: numerous weapons, explosives and ammunition cartages that had to be carried at all times. Among the necessities or near-necessities were P-38 can openers, pocket knives, heat tabs… …and two or three liters of water. Simultaneously, these items weighed between 12 and 18 pounds. They all carried steel helmets that weighed 5 pounds. On their feet they carried jungle boots—2.1 pounds (O’Brien 2).
