Unoka was a very unsuccessful man and was buried heavily in debt, this, inspired Okonkwo to be nothing like him, completely changing his characteristics. Despite all of Okonkwo’s pretentious manliness, he was ruled by fear – a profound fear of being deemed weak and feminine, like his father. Although Okonkwo sometimes acted this way, “Okonkwo was not a cruel man. His whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and weakness.”(Achebe 5)
