The people of Oceania are subject to torment of all kinds of varieties, from physical to mental attacks, and whether they know it or not they are all being psychologically manipulated. Throughout 1984 it can be seen that the party is lying or changing the truth at will, that is the whole purpose of the ministry of truth, this method along with others is how the party and big brother use power to psychologically manipulate the people to control them. This is an idea prevalent throughout all stages of the book to warn people of the potential dangers of a totalitarian government and what they are capable of through psychological manipulation along with other means. When the narrator makes this statement, it is one of few times the reader doesn’t hear from Winston’s perspective, and it says that he “won the victory over himself” showing how the party broke Winston down to the point where he believes that he was the problem. This demonstrates a totalitarian power and ability to manipulate to the fullest extent because of how the party rebuilt Winston and others into party supporters. In the quote it states Winston, “loved”, by big brother therefore the party too, but not that he was loyal to the party or liked, that he loved the party, love is one of the strongest forms of admiration love is strong. The goal of the party is to love big brother no matter what, in order for this to work, it is to psychologically manipulate everyone. The placement of the quote that Winston says at the very end of the book is very crucial to give it more significance to the meaning of the book and the power behind the psychological manipulation, proving that in the end, under a totalitarian government, they will get what they want once in control.
