The reason to why Shakespeare has added this character is because she is a foil to Desdemona. She also serves to bring upon the tragic ending of Othello. This is because of how she unknowingly gave Iago the clue needed to convince Othello he was a cuckold. Another reason is because thanks to her Othello finds out that Iago has been lying to him and that results in her death. The result of that is Othello’s tragic ending, which is death. Roderigo: Roderigo is a character in the play who is deeply in love with Desdemona. Shakespeare put this character in the play to show how desperate people may get to win the love of somebody. Roderigo is used by Iago so that Iago could have his revenge against Othello. Iago also depends on Roderigo financially, because he is paying him so that Othello’s relation with Desdemona can end. He is a sympathetic character since he basically went broke so that he could end up with the love of his life, but instead was betrayed and killed by the person he thought was helping him.
