Paul’s Choices Affect His Character’s Development To begin, Paul’s choices affect his development of his character in a big way. One main choice is when Paul chooses to go to Tangerine Middle School, which by multiple reasons, and therefore allows him to join the school soccer team. Another choice is when Paul tackles Coach Warner, which leads him to be more confident in himself. Lastly, Paul deciding to tell on Erik is caused by many reasons, and allows Paul to overcome his fear of Erik. Edward Bloor’s Tangerine suggests that Paul’s choices, big or small, has a huge impact on the development of Paul’s character.
The first choice, Paul choosing to go to Tangerine Middle School, is caused by a bit of reasons, which allows him to join the soccer team. First, Paul sacrifices attention to join Tangerine’s soccer team. “‘I don’t mind if you never pay any attention to me for the rest of my life, just give me this chance’”(Bloor 59). Paul’s choice of abandoning attention just to play soccer reveals that he, as a person, sacrifices almost anything to join the soccer team. Paul wants to join the soccer team on all costs. One of the reasons for Paul telling on Erik was because Arthur and Erik killed Luis. “Luis Cruz is dead”(Bloor 244). Paul witnessed the entire thing through the bleachers. When Luis died, Paul was saddened, but at the same time mad at Erik and Arthur. Paul is so mad that he tells Joey that it is okay to tell on Arthur and Erik. “‘Yeah. Why not?’”(Bloor 172). Paul’s character is now less afraid of Erik and Arthur, who have been mean to him for a while. Paul, when he told on Erik, is now hated by Erik, but is a hero to his parents.
