Do they have a change? In some stories characters may have little or no arc. Like in the book Emergency contact by Mary H.K. Choi there are two characters, Penny Lee and Sam, who were very much so in their own world at the start of the story. Throughout the story their friendship and relationships while they also deal with self problems. The things that happen in the story don’t really change them as people but them together. In the start of the story, Penny feels very alone and out-of-place. Her mom isn't the ideal parent and she has a boyfriend who is perfect to the world around them but to her he's just a jerk and annoying. “ Not that Penny ever publicly referred to Mark as her “boyfriend’’.(page 8). At first things might have been weird but after a while of getting close they become very good friends. From reading the story you will notice that the Character arc happens more of when they are dating then on their own. According to AR Becker, “Some people, with their string of ex’s, family dysfunctions, and resulting distrust/false assumptions, get dismissed by potential partners because of their “excess baggage”.” In the book the Penny and Sam deal with their exs and and problems with their mothers. Threw out the book those things cause a blockage between them and the father in the story they become close solving those problems with advice from each other. Also, Penny has a had time tell how she feels In the story and it causes a very hard communication in the story. After they learn to be more open and honest with each other it cause a big connection that wasn't there at first. “...because having a goal and challenges between here and there equals a story in progress. The real story of couples only comes out once they feel comfortable baring their difficulties and speaking with brutal honesty”(Buckert).
