These tools are being used to create the suspenseful tale known as “The Tell-Tale Heart” In “The Tell-Tale Heart”, Poe taps into out schema and our own fears to create plenty of tension in the story. “... I could see him as he lay upon his bed”(61). The “madman” in the story watches the innocent individual while he sleeps. “... It is nothing but the wind in the chimney, it is only a mouse crossing the floor” (62),. We, the reader, have all experienced the fear of being watched by unseen eyes. We also know the feeling of trying to calm ourselves down when we hear a noise. The narrator describes what did and how he did it in great detail. This gives the reader a clear insight into what the incident looks like. “First of all, I dismembered the corpse. I cut off the head and the arms and the legs” (63). The madman explains how he hid the corpse of the old man which gives the reader an explicit view of the scene. “A watches hand moves more quickly than did mine” (62). This quote gives the reader a clear understanding of how attentive and alert this madman
