In William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies many characters change, three of the main characters that change were Ralph, Jack and Roger. Ralph changes a lot throughout the novel, at the beginning Ralph is somewhat shy and rude, to characters such as Piggy, but he becomes very different as the novel progresses. At the beginning Jack is very agreeing with Ralph and tries to follow the rules to keep the boys civilized. One example is when he takes the takes the boys watching the fire hunting, and the fire goes out, he apologizes to Ralph for letting it go out. But as the story moves along he starts to move away from Ralph and his ideas. When Ralph and Jack are arguing and Ralph brings up the rules he seems appalled. He says “Who cares” when Ralph says he’s breaking the rules and “Bollocks to the rules”. Jack only gets worse as we move into the future. Jack sets up his own group of savages who paint themselves and hunt pigs, in which he is chief of. At the ending Ralph is informed by SamnEric that Jack had Roger sharpen a stick on both ends for Ralphs head to be placed on. Jack and the savages even go as far as setting the whole island on fire just to find Ralph and kill him. “If I blow the conch and they don’t come back; then we’ve had it. We shan’t keep the fire going. We’ll be like animals…” (83).This shows how Ralph knows that if he blows the conch they might as well all turn into animals like Jack has become.
