The boys are separated into groups “littluns”, which are the younger aged boys, and “biguns”, the older boys. The boys elected a leader, Ralph. They also appoint a boy named Piggy to help Ralph, but another boy, Jack, wanted to be leader as well. So Jack takes some of the boys takes them to go hunting. That soon leads to Jack drawing those boys away from Ralph’s leadership. During the story the boys spot a beast on the top of the mountain. They saw an open parachute that had fallen from the sky. Ralph is a white, twelve year old boy. In the book he is known as “the boy with fair hair”. He is tall and thin and also has a golden body. He is charismatic, a born leader, and a social person. He is also the most civilized out of all of the boys trapped on the island. Ralph’s characteristics make him seem like the perfect guy.
Throughout the book Ralph does grow as a character. In the beginning he becomes leader to keep the boys civilized. But as the boys become more savage, Ralph starts to become like them. He slowly turn into a savage even though he isn't exactly doing what the other boys are doing. He thought turning savage is the only way to survive. But he doesn't lose all of his civilization.
