When the presence of the beast was confirmed, the older boys had different opinions about how the problem should be handled. All of them approached this problem in different ways. Some ideas were brave, while others were realistic or idiotic. In this chapter, the ideas proposed by the boys express their personalities and show how the boys have changed. The first boy to announce their idea was Simon, and he suggested that they all go up to the mountain and face the beast once in for all, since he thinks that there is not anything else to do anyway. Simon’s proposal was brave, but they have to keep in mind that they do not really have any weapons besides wooden spears. In this situation, the beast would not attack them since the beast is actually a dead guy on a parachute, but the boys do not know that. Furthermore, Piggy decides to not do anything about the beast and focus on getting rescued instead. He then brought up the idea of having a new signal fire by the beach rather than focusing on the one on the mountain. Ralph agrees with his idea, therefore his opinion about how the problem should be handled is the same as Piggy’s. Though, towards the end of the chapter Ralph seemed to be losing it when he held the assembly about focusing on the fire. “’The fire’s the most important thing. Without the fire we can’t be rescued. I’d like to put on war-paint and be a savage. But we must keep the fire burning. The fire’s the most important thing on the island, because, because––‘” (page 142). This shows that Ralph has lost his fluency in words when doing a speech, and seems to be confused on what he actually wants to do.
