How Does Rolfe Use The Characterization In Ray Bradbury's And Of Clay

In the story "And of Clay," Allende utilizes characterization to create a calm mood. Rolfe is by Azucena's side throughout this terrible event. When Azcuenca sees that Rolfe is getting emotional she states, "don't cry. I don't hurt anymore, I'm fine" (4). This shows the characters calm mood instead of getting freaked out because the uncertainty if she will live or not she decides to comfort Rolfe. It's important because it shows who Azucena is as a person and how she puts others before herself. Then from Rolfe's persepective he describes that, "the girl could barely move, she could barely breathe, but she did not see, desperate, as if an ancestral resignation allowed her to accept her fate" (2). Yet again proving how her calm nature was expressed in the eyes of others surrounding her. It shows how calm Azcuena was acting trying to hide the pain from others around her even though she knew her fate so she could make Rolfe and the people watching feel more at peace even though they cannot save her. Even though the couple thinks it's the end of the world the wife answers how she feels that, "No, nor do I really. It's just a feeling ; sometimes it frightens me, sometimes I'm not frightened at all- but peaceful" (1). That even though the world may be ending she's at peace knowing that she lived her life the way she wanted to and handles the life or death situation in a graceful manner similar to Azuenca in "And of Clay". Later on she again states that "I always thought I would be frightened to death, but I'm not". (2) Showing that she is also accepting of her fate like Azuenca, showing her character a person and how instead of being fearful of a situation she decides to just live out her last days like any other day.
