For instance, after only meeting hours prior Romeo visits Juliet in her garden expressing his love, declaring, “O, speak again, bright angel, for thou art As glorious to this night, being o’er my head, As is a wingèd messenger of heaven” (Shakespeare 2.2.29-31). Shakespeare uses a metaphor, comparing Juliet to a “bright angel,” to show how passionate Romeo feels about Juliet. He views her as a perfect deity. Despite the duration, they have developed a bond powerful enough to view one another as gods. These themes are in Lana Del Rey’s “Cherry.” For instance, Lana Del Ray begins the song by speaking of an emotional relationship with a lover, singing, “It’s like heaven taking the place of something evil. And lettin’ it burn off from the rush.” Lana Del Ray uses the simile “like heaven” to compare her relationship to something holy and divine. She compares it to god or an angel, an entity with supernatural power. In the Bible, Heaven is a place of complete peace and tranquility. This person brings out these feelings in her. It is similar to how Romeo views Juliet as a radiant enchanting angel that peers down upon him from the heavens. In addition, the
