When Romeo and Juliet meet, Shakespeare depicts Juliet as a witty but mature character. At the feast Romeo abruptly grabs Juliet’s hand and Romeo kisses Juliet. Once the kiss is over, Juliet tells Romeo, “You kiss by th’ book” (I.iv.110). Juliet teases Romeo about Romeo’s kissing skills because Romeo uses a kiss to express the love Romeo has for Juliet, instead of something meaningful and deep from his heart. This kiss changes everything. Even though Romeo’s kiss does not please Juliet, Romeo and Juliet fall in love which causes more of a grudge between their families.
