In the story To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee one of the main characters is Jean Louise also known as Scout. Scout is a very compassionate, forgiving, fearful, and a very strong advocate for women. Most of these traits someone as young as she is would not normally have. Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird Jean Louise - also known as Scout shows many traits someone her age might not normally have. Scout is very compassionate fearful. Scout shows her compassion as she was on the Radley porch - she realized that you will never know someone until you see and go through what they are experiencing. “Atticus was right. “The ladies were cool in fragile pastel prints: most of them were heavily powdered but unrouged; the only lipstick in the room was Tangee Natural. Cutex Natural sparkled on their fingernails, but some of the younger ladies wore Rose. They smelled heavenly. I sat quietly, having conquered my hands by tightly gripping the arms of the chair, and waited for someone to speak to me” (Lee 229). Scout had just as much fear of the ladies as she did amazement. Scout shows she realizes what being a girl really is while watching others. “Calpurnia seemed glad to see me when I appeared in the kitchen, and by watching her I began to think there was some skill involved in being a girl”(Lee 115/116). Scout has had her standards of what women should be by her brother, but once Scout sees Calpurnia working she realizes otherwise - to show her womanly traits instead of hiding them. “I was not so sure, but Jem told me I was being a girl, that girls always imagined things, that's why other people hated them so, and if I started behaving like one I could just go off and find some to play with”(Lee 41). Scout has always been taught that girls are bad, and boys have everything that could ever be good - she can not be one of the bad girls if she doesn't act like one.
