Written in the 1840s, Charles Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol” is a classic novella that displays themes about greed, generosity, and redemption. Although written in the Elizabethan Era, it is still relevant today’s society.
The Ghost of Christmas Present changes Scrooge’s perspective on how he should view Christmas as a whole and changes his negative views into positive ones. In Stave 3 of a Christmas Carol, the Ghost brings Scrooge to see a vision of the Cratchit’s celebrating Christmas together as a family. As we see many times in the novella, we see how Scrooge shows negative and pessimistic thoughts on anything other than money. During the beginning of the story, two men approach Scrooge and ask him to help the poor with a donation. Scrooge does not care for anyone at all and already considers taxes as donations and “if they would rather die... they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population” (pg. 7). This saying by Scrooge reminded me of how homeless people are treated today. There are so many people who neglect and ignore the homeless in Australia and don’t even care to bat an eye towards them. There are also many different groups that raise money and go around asking for donations and most people tend to not feel the need to donate. I have heard many people not even want the homeless people on the streets, especially in the city which shows the similarities between getting rid of the homeless and how Scrooge says that “if they would rather die... they had better do it” (pg. 7). However, after Scrooge’s encounter with all the 3 spirits, he is taught to respect and appreciate Christmas times. All the 3 encounters made it so Scrooge “will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future” (pg. 50). By just experiencing what Christmas is lik in different perspectives, can change how a person sees things. Scrooge was able to see what Christmas was like for himself in the past, for other people in the present, and how he ends up in the future through the Ghosts that teach him to be appreciative. When I was in primary school, we were ordered to bring buckets and walk to a creek, fill it with water and carry it back to school to experience what it was like for those in 3rd world countries. Before this, I didn’t really acknowledge the struggles that people in these living conditions had to
