Today I will be talking about the story, A Christmas Carol, by Israel Horovitz. This story is about a character named Ebenezer Scrooge, an old man who is miserable, rude, and ungiving. Scrooge hates people in general, especially people who celebrate Christmas, he lives by himself and misses his old business partner, Jacob Marley. Scrooge is introduced to us in his office, where he is seen being quite rude to his employee Cratchit. Scrooge’s nephew arrives at his office and tries to wish Scrooge a Merry Christmas but Scrooge simply dispels him by saying good afternoon. Scrooge returns home to find the ghost of his old business partner, Jacob Marley confronting him, Marley shows Scrooge the chains and the torture of the afterlife that Scrooge will experience if he doesn’t change his ways, Marley says that 3 spirits will appear once the bell tolls at a certain time, The Ghosts Of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, Marley says that these spirits will haunt Scrooge to change his horrible personality. Scrooge initially asks if he can have all three at once, which angers Marley and causes him to lash out a bit. This terrifies Scrooge and he promises to take the spirits. Scrooge asks Present if Tiny Tim will survive, and Present says that he won't, unless Scrooge changes his horrible ways. Scrooge feels horrible for saying that Tiny Tim should die and “Decrease the surplus population.”
Present then takes Scrooge to his nephew’s house, where they are all mostly making fun of Scrooge, and how horrible he is, Scrooge feels horrible. Then, Present starts repeating the phrase “Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?” As a way to show Scrooge the horrible things he has said and done.
