Throughout all the plays I read by William Shakespeare, love seems to be the most powerful factor that tells the story. Without love, there cannot be sacrifice, honor or respect because a person cannot sacrifice, honor, or respect something or someone they do not first love or care for. William Shakespeare clearly portrays this in his text Hamlet. In Hamlet, love has a strange way of expressing itself, such as through the words that were said, the actions that were shown, and the people it involved. Likewise, this strange way of love was shown throughout Hamlet and Ophelia in the text that marked a key part of the story. As portrayed in the film, Hamlet and Ophelia’s relationship started off where Ophelia invited Hamlet to spend time with her, but unfortunately he was not able to make time for her on his schedule. In addition, Hamlet never told Ophelia that he wouldn’t be able to meet up with her in which led Ophelia to be left alone waiting for him to show up. Also, Hamlet did not apologize to her for not being able to show up, it was just understood. As a result, Ophelia expresses no anger towards the actions he shows her and still loves him regardless. Although, throughout the film it was shown that Hamlet will always tell Ophelia with words the way he feels about her, but his actions were a different story. For instance, he wrote her countless letters expressing his love for her in which she stored in a box specifically designed for all of the things Hamlet gave her. Yet, he never made time to get to know her as a person and express his love for her with his actions. It wasn’t until Ophelia died that he clearly showed he loved her by expressing and shouting out to her brother Laertes that “He loved her and always loved her.” From that moment, it was clear that Hamlet did love her, but he didn’t
