There are many ways an author or playwright can portray relationships in their works. One instance of such is William Shakespeare in his play Romeo and Juliet where he uses many techniques to do just so. Two techniques in particular that he uses are language and structure, through the means of the choice of words to display trust, length of dialogue and the choice of words to display other emotions. An example of this is in Act IV scene I, when Paris has just left the scene. Juliet says to the Friar “Oh shut the door, and when thou hast done so,/ come weep with me, past hope, past cure, past help.” The use of the word weep calls forth an indication that not only is juliet sad, but she is distraught. Romeo’s banishment made her cry, but the marriage to Paris is making her weep. This shows that Juliet really does not like Paris and their relationship is really one sided. The use of the descriptive language has allowed the relationship between Paris and Juliet to be further examined and explored.
