William Shakespeare’s Hamlet takes place in Elsinore, Denmark during the 15th century. After the king of Denmark dies, his brother takes his place as king and marries his sister-in-law. The ghost of the fallen king explains to his son, Hamlet, that he has been murdered by his own brother. The ghost then instructs Hamlet to seek revenge on his uncle and to take back the crown. Marcellus, a friend of Hamlet, declares that “Something is rotten in the state of Denmark” (1.5 100). Hamlet is trying to follow his father's command and to revenge the “villain” who poisoned his father. Throughout the whole play, Hamlet is trying to bring an end to the insestous relationship and to kill his uncle. Hamlet is informed of the truth by his father’s ghost.
