“Stitches” By Shawn Mendes is one of the first songs that I ever truly loved. Me and my brother would often play the song and dance around in our living room when we were younger, with no regard for the lyrics or the meaning of them. The song “Stitches” By Shawn Mendes and the purpose of its unique lyrics are to tell the story of heartbreak, dependence, and how the pain of heartbreak can be more than just mental and can feel physical at times. Mendes uses a simile when comparing his need for a person to the way in which a moth is drawn to a flame, “Just like a moth drawn to a flame” (Mendes 1:34). The simile is used to represent the longing for a person and how that longing is more than just love. Moths are unable to stay away from a light no matter how much they try, and he can’t stay away from this person no matter how much he is hurt at the end of that day. This simile is a representation of an dependence on a person, a dependence that can kill, just how a moth drawn to a flame will burn when too close. The closeness that is once ached for will be his undoing. Another literary device used by Mendes is Irony. Throughout the song Mendes uses irony to let the audience know that even though he is in pain he still desires the person that caused it. This further leads to prove the themes of heartbreak and dependence on people that have caused pain because after they cause it they soothe it making it feel as if it never occurred in the first
