Conflict is an exciting element that creates tension and helps character development in a story. In Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” they explore man vs society when each member of the town must draw from a black box.”All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury is an outstanding example of man vs man conflict, Margot is faced against a young boy who is very jealous of her. “A Jury of Her Peers” by Susan Glaspell goes in depth with man vs society conflict by having the main character, Mrs.Wright held for the murder of her husband. “The Lottery” creates a lot of conflict, Tesse, who is the main character is put on the spot after her husband picked the winning sheet. The boy was very jealous of Margot because she came from Earth and loved the sun. Almost every scene had the boy looking like he didn’t know anything and left out. This created jealousy because Margot was seen on top until he locked her in a storage closet when the sun was coming up. The boy sees Margot as a know it all even though she has never done anything wrong to him. Susan Glaspell explores man vs society in “A Jury of Her Peers” by creating a murder that leaves the main character Mrs.Wright locked up and her peers are deciding whether she did the crime or not. While she is locked away 2 of her friends are “searching” for evidence. They find very crucial evidence but hide it from their husbands. There was conflict between Mrs.Wright and her husband which led to his death, many say he is abusive and once he killed her bird she snapped. The final conflict was where her peers had to decide whether she was guilty or not. In conclusion, each of the stories showed plenty of conflict.
