Shirley Jackson uses symbolism of the black box to convey a theme about how a person’s whole life can change when one little implement is made different or messed with in the short story, “The Lottery.” For instance, Mr. Summers frequently spoke about making a new box, but “no one liked to upset even as much tradition as was represented by the black box” (26).
