In James W. Loewen’s “The Land of Opportunity,” he states that social class affects the way children are raised. He discusses the inequality in today’s society and how the textbooks in high school do not give any social class information. The students in today’s time are not taught everything they should be taught. He states that your family’s wealth is what makes up your future. Loewen discusses that people with more money can study for the SATs more productively and get a better score than someone who has less money.
The way we view each other in terms of finance, education, and family aspects depends on a person’s social class. Students from lower backgrounds usually experience difficulty in the educational system. The educational standards of their family’s life differ from those in the higher classes because teachers teach according to the student. Meaning, not only does having a particular social class already separate you in terms of the educational system, but it also determines how and what you learn. From personal experience I’ve learned how to see from the perspective of a student who is of a lower social class than majority of his peers and teachers.
Social Class In The Outsiders In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton a common theme shown through the book is social class. The Outsiders is about two very different gangs on each side of town, The Greasers and the Socs, they compete against each other in fights and rumbles. There are differences between each side, such as different dress codes and hang out spots. The Socs get away with their crimes because they are higher up the social class, while the Greasers are seen as no good dirty hoods This novel demonstrates how money can separate people from one another and affect every aspect of their lives.
Poverty and discrimination affects both main characters but in different ways. Richard is ashamed of the pity he is getting and Maleeka is bullied because of what she wears. Both feelings will stay with the main character for the rest of their lives and that's what truly arises emotion in the reader. Richard was so determined to prove he had money, he told his class he would donate 15 dollars to the cause. If he had 15 dollars he probably would have given them in rather than buying himself the food he desperately needs to survive.
They are in the rich vs poor society and they are placed unfortunately in the poor part of society. The rising peak of the story is when Miss Moore first moves into their neighborhood and claims her self as the future educator for the kids and plans to turn them into the right direction so they can be presentable in society. The central idea is the examination of the rich and poor society. The primary conflict of the story is external between the kids and society. They realize they are born into the poor part of society but still have the desire to want.
The amount of power the social classes play in the society in the book The Outsiders is crucial. The social classes divided the society into two main parts, the Socs and the Greasers. The coming of age and development of the characters has really created a bond between them. While it has created trust, it has also created distrust among the two gangs. The gangs were raised to hate and distrust each other.
In life those who surround us have the greatest effect upon our lives. A person’s ability to collect friends of a certain social class is vital to the type of life that they will live. Although it is the dream of all people to live with immense wealth, the others of the same social standard can tend to act in a way that can damage the people around them. A result of being surrounded by this type of person is seen in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s, The Great Gatsby, in which many characters are hurt by the behavior of the rich people around them. In this novel three characters, Jay Gatsby, Myrtle Wilson, and George Wilson, play important roles in explaining how social classes cause society to become dysfunctional and can lead to chaos and even death.
I believe social classes have defined our society in many ways. In America, they separate people into three different classes: the upper class, middle class, and the lower or working class. Based on wealth and various occupations, social classes determine the population’s status in society. Social classes today define individuals and influence their actions. Although people born in a certain class may choose to stay there, they also have the choice of leaving.
There are four social classes: upper class, middle class, working class and under class. An example of people who may be discriminated against because of their social class would be someone who is poor. Individuals who are poor, under class and some working class, in school could be called ‘scruffy’ by their peers because they might not be able to afford new clothes. This could lead to teachers discriminating and treating students differently. This could show overt and covert discrimination in a health and social care setting.
The book "To Kill a Mockingbird" describes different classes of people as been rich and poor. People classify themselves differently because some people are in poverty, while some are wealthy. Most wealthy people help the poor, but the main people they help are the Cunningham 's family. They help the Cunningham 's family because they are willing to work and they are hard working. People never help the Ewell 's family because they are rude, lazy, and they waste their money on alcohol.
Social class is what gets you where you are today. You could be in the Low Class to the point where you get treated or judged poorly or you could maybe be in the higher class where you get treated and judged a little bit on the better side. You could even be in the middle class which is in between the good and the worst. The crucible doesn’t really show the characters different social class but it does show how they are being judged just because they are a witch or a bad person. People shouldn't be judged just by what class they are
The movie also shows us what happens in this world when people see others as less than themselves. As with the example of Judy defending her friend against the fox. She is scratched by him but in the end still does not let her natural instincts of fear overpower her dreams. Judy is classified as the weakest link throughout the movie, but continues to prove herself against the odds. The examples of social classes throughout the movie I think are also very close to what our social classes look like today.
In addition, class is complex, it is a way to label everyone. Class is portrayed in this novel by the wealth and standing one were in at this time there were the high class and the middle class standings. The difference between these social classes creates tension and prejudice. Those in the same social classes would interact and soon get married. They kept their boundarie, while families in the middle class could communicate with those in the higher class but would not be treated with the same respect as those of the higher class.
Social Class Social class assumed a significant part in the general public portrayed in Charles Dickens ' Great Expectations. Social class decided the way in which an individual was dealt with and their right to gain entrance to instruction. Yet, social class did not characterize the character of the single person. For each class, there are some specific opportunities available that influence their social life. We can understand about the particularity of the chances through unequal distribution of these opportunities between individuals in social classes. In here belonging to a social class seems to be an obstacle for some individuals to obtain equal opportunity, unlike upper class people.
