Does Social Media Cause Isolation?

In today’s time when someone comes home from work or school they immediately get on their phone, Ipad, or laptop. All the kids are now on Instagram or Twitter and the dad is on the computer, while the mom is checking up on Facebook. Most family nowadays do not even have a proper dinner where they all eat together and tell about their day. Dinner in today’s time consist of fast food and the couch. When teens hang out together they usually end up playing on their phone more than actually having a conversation with each other. Little kids these day are growing up with an Ipad in their hands and getting phones at young ages. Social media is causing isolation because people are not using their senses, it creates an illusion of companionship, it is a distraction, and causes health effects.

First, social media does not allow one to use their senses like real life communication does. Social media was supposed to help people socialize but it does the opposite. Facebook tends to make people more lonely and isolated instead of being social. The more isolated one is from people the more one will be lonely and may end up in a geriatric home. When people go on social media one will see everyone’s perfect lifes and one might start to feel depressed because their life is not perfect (Marche). Modern society suffers more from depression and anxiety than ever before (Machaiah). Many older adults are starting to feel more chronically lonely than ever before and many Americans are living alone.
