The ratification debate of 1788 pitted Federalists against Antifederalists over adoption of the proposed Constitution. Through the Eyes of John Patrick Coby "Raising the Eleventh Pillar: This essay will examine the key differences between the Federalist and Antifederalist positions in regard to the 1788 ratification debate and their positions on key issues debated. Federalists backed the proposed Constitution from Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay. They envisioned a powerful central government which could correct the weaknesses in the Articles of Confederation. Federalist arguments argued for a united nation capable of regulating commerce, maintaining national defense, and ensuring economic prosperity.

According to lock in, “in a survey of registered US voters by the Pew Research Center in early 2016, 44 percent of all residents said they believed that “reforming the criminal justice system should be a top priority”; the percentage rose to 73 percent for black respondents and 48 percent for Hispanics" (Pfaff,2017, P5). People have faith in reforming the justice system. This survey was carried to see if people are satisfied with the justice system and have the voter’s responses that they believe it should reform.
The Media is a common source that many people continue to use to get important information. Journalists are known for seeking out the truth and making sure the public hears it. When the media presents to their audience the details about popular events it influences the actions and mind set of many which could cause them to react negatively or positively. In the memoir, Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals, the citizens in the town called Little Rock frequently used the media as a way of getting their voices heard. From back in the day to now, the media still holds a high influence on everyone regarding important information down to the common day to day activity of others.

The United States has a larger percent of its population incarcerated than any other country. America is responsible for a quarter of the world’s inmates, and its incarceration rate is growing exponentially. The expense generated by these overcrowded prisons cost the country a substantial amount of money every year. While people are incarcerated for several reasons, the country’s prisons are focused on punishment rather than reform, and the result is a misguided system that fails to rehabilitate criminals or discourage crime. This literature review will discuss the ineffectiveness of the United States’ criminal justice system and how mass incarceration of non-violent offenders, racial profiling, and a high rate of recidivism has become a problem.
Mass incarceration is somewhat overlooked by those on the outside and those who are on the inside are considered forgotten about and viewed as less than. The US abides by the motto of “Tough on Crime.” Citizen and political leaders believe that by employing incarceration as a persistent threat it will invite people to conform to social norms and discourage in engaging in illegal behavior. According to my survey, a 14 to 1 ratio attests the impact social media has on people’s attitudes and thoughts of the police. The media has a limited amount of information with which to generate a story. Invariably much of that information comes from the angry and grieving relatives of the deceased so the story that is told for many months, as the department’s legal and internal review processes continue, is very much one-sided, almost always casting the police in a negative light. As a person that uses social media daily, I would have to agree. There are always videos and articles posted on social media highlighting unjust actions policemen take toward black people.
People of all different races and ethnicities are locked behind bars because they have been convicted of committing a crime and they are paying for the consequences. When looking at the racial composition of a prison in the United States, it does not mimic the population. This is because some races and ethnicities are over represented in the correctional system in the U.S. (Walker, Spohn, & DeLone, 2018). According Walker et al. (2018), African-Americans/Blacks make up less than fifteen percent of the U.S. population, while this race has around thirty-seven percent of the population in the correctional system today.
According to a Washington Post article written by Jerome G. Miller, The US has the highest incarceration rate of any democratic country. US Prisons hold more than 2.4 million inmates, or 1% of the US population. Based on the percentage of the population in Prison, the United States incarcerates five times more people than Britain, nine times more than Germany, and 12 times more than Japan (Miller). These high incarceration rates are coupled with high recidivism rates, which lead to prisons being overcrowded. The majority of criminals in prison will be released.
For example, the most recently alarming mass shooting occurred only a month ago in Parkland, Florida at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where a former student waltzed into one of the school buildings with an AR-15, pulled a fire alarm, and aimed his weapon at fleeing students, faculty, and staff, killing 17, and wounding 17 other victims, and has been broadcast across every platform almost nonstop. While this heartbreaking tragedy deserves all of the media attention it’s been receiving, there have been approximately 14 additional mass shootings, where 14 people have been killed, and almost 50 have been injured, with very little to no coverage in the news. For years people have played the “blame game” with media and its effects on society. It has been questioned whether the media helps or hurts more in its overall impacts. The media consists of magazines, advertisements, TV shows, and social pages such as Instagram, SnapChat, Twitter, and Facebook, all in which society seems to be addicted to. The real question is, is having all of these sources of media positively or negatively affecting society? Some people blame the media for harming society by causing eating disorders and a low self esteem.
