How Does Sookan Get Braver

Throughout The Year of Impossible Goodbyes, Sookan keeps on getting braver and more courageous throughout the book, which are displayed in these three situations. This first situation shows that Sookan is brave, even if it is in the smallest of ways. The first situation is when the imperial police barged in to Sookan’s yard and took the sock girls away. “The soldiers dealt a blow to Kisa instead, who fell to the ground, screaming.”(Choi 60). This quote shows that Kisa got hurt (obviously…), because he was trying to save the sock girls from getting taken away from the imperial police. Sookan needed to be brave during this, because she too, loved the sock girls, and seeing them getting hurt by the police was really hard. Sookan wanted to do something about it, but after what happened to Kisa...it was a good thing she didn't try to. It is when Sookan was forced to go to the Japanese school. It was a horrible school where Japanese teacher were very cruel to the students. Even after remembering the horrible story of Sookan’s brother coming home dripping with blood, because of the torture at the Japanese school, Sookan had to go. She was terrified to go!She could have easily gotten hurt very bad, but she had the courage and bravery to go. On top of all that, sometime during her first week of school, after a boy stood up and told the Japanese teachers that they were the mean and horrible ones, Sookan started clapping for him! “The students gasped. But I clapped my hands in delight. I couldn't help myself.”(81). Sookan really needed a lot of courage to do that act, and even if it got here into some trouble, she still showed herself as a brave, courageous
