The comic MAUS by Art Spiegelman is a graphic novel about A Jews' point of view from World War 2 and all the things they went through. So far, the three Main characters are Vlaek (Father), Anja (mother), and Artie ( Author/Son). Spiegleman teaches the audience about Vladek, ANja, and Artie through the use of Internal Conflict, Situational Irony, Dialogue, and Imagery. Spiegelman uses Internal Conflict and Imagery to characterize Vladek. Vladek didn't want to shoot anyone, he just wanted to stay hidden, but he had to. ¨His name was Jan… And I knew I killed him¨ (Spiegelman, 52, 5). Anja loved her son so much, but unfortunately, led to his death. ¨I'LL NEVER GIVE UP MY BABY. NEVER!¨ (Spiegelman, 83,6). This quote shows that because Anja loved her son too much to let go, he died. This evidence is an example of situational irony because the reader wasn't expecting Richieu dying Anja's love for him would keep him alive. Unfortunately, it did the exact opposite. This quote shows how Anja was overprotective by not wanting to let go of her son. After giving birth, Anja experienced postpartum depression. ¨I don't know!
