How Does Steinbeck Characterize Lennie's Character

Sometimes in life, someone always needs help. The story “Of Mice and Men”, that was written back in 1937 by the author John Steinbeck, talks about Lennie and how he is that person who always needs help. Steinbeck wrote this book with the purpose to show the readers how Lennie really is. The question is how does John Steinbeck use indirect characterization to show the readers Lennie’s real behavior. The author answer this question by showing us many different situations where we can see Lennie’s reactions. Therefore Lennie’s character act’s childish, dreamer, and not that smart.

Lennie is a man that is around 50 years old that always acts childish because he does not control himself, he does not know how to act until George tells him to do something. For example, if George scratches his head Lennie will do the same thing as George. On page 41 George says, “...he seen this girl in a red dress...he wants every’thing …show more content…

On page 105 Lennie said, “ ‘Tell how it’s gonna be’... ‘We gonna get a little place...little piece alfalfa’______’For the rabbits’ ’’. This shows how Lennie always asks George how is going to be their future. This proves how Lennie is a dreamer because he always try to talk with George about their future. The most of the time Lennie is thinking about the rabbits that he is going to have in the future because he loves soft things.

Lennie acts daft because he always makes things without knowing what result is going to have, sometimes it affects people. On page 3 George says, “Lennie, for God’ sakes don’t drink so much...Lennie. You gonna be sick like you were last night”. This quote shows how Lennie act’s without thinking what is going to happen to him because he does not realize what is going to happen if he drinks dirty water. Before he does something that is going to affect him he acts as a kid because he does not know what effect he is going to
