A healthy relationship can be viewed from many different angles. In Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, George and Lennie were always with each other. They travel together, eat together, and work together. After a while, this causes difficulty getting along all the time. This relationship alters many times the way they act towards each other. Lennie and George’s relationship consists of many challenges and obstacles that cause friction between the two, but the aspects of their relationship and how they differ from others keep them together. As George takes care of Lennie, their father/son relationship is shown. This relationship is inferred within the novel when George tells Lennie,“Hide in the brush by the river….if you get in trouble” …show more content…

As Lennie and Crooks are conversing, Lennie cries, “George wun’t go away and leave me. I know George wun’t do that” (Steinbeck 73). Lennie explains to Crooks how he knows George will always be there for him. Thus proving that the two have built a bond of trust for one another. The bond that has been built between George and Lennie keeps them together when times are tough. Another type of relationship George and Lennie have is their friendship. Their friendship can be observed when George tells their boss, Curley, “He’s my … cousin. I told his old lady I’d take care of him” (Steinbeck 22). George is backing up Lennie by lying to their boss the very first day they got there. This support that George gives Lennie backs their friendship because he is willing to take a bullet for Lennie. The connection and friendship George and Lennie have is what differs them from other ranchers. The relationships that are built between George and Lennie is what keeps them together through the tough times in their lives. Throughout their travels, George had to protect Lennie as his father-like figure. They also had a close relationship that was built up over time. George and Lennie both know that they will always be there for each other, thus differing them from other ranchers. In order to maintain a healthy relationship, different aspects are needed so that it can be held together through
